Jia Baoyu's Visit to the Land of Illusion (part 3)

Back

Baoyu sees a beautiful woman approaching, graceful and elegant, unlike any mortal. There is a poem describing her:
"Just left the willow grove, just emerged from the flower chamber.
Where she walks, birds startle in the courtyard trees;
When she arrives, her shadow crosses the corridor.
Her immortal robe flutters, releasing the fragrance of musk and orchids;
Her lotus attire sways, echoing the sound of her jewelry.
Her smile is like spring peach blossoms, her hair adorned with jade;
Her lips are like cherries, her teeth like fragrant pomegranates.
Her slender waist is as graceful as snowflakes in the wind;
Her jewelry sparkles with emerald green and golden yellow.
She moves among the flowers, charming in both anger and joy;
She lingers by the pond, as if flying and floating.
Her brows knit slightly, about to speak but not yet;
Her lotus steps move lightly, wanting to stop but still walking.
Admiring her pure beauty, as clear as ice and as beautiful as jade;
Envious of her splendid attire, sparkling with patterns.
Loving her appearance, nurtured by incense and jade;
Comparing her demeanor, like a phoenix soaring and a dragon flying.
How pure is she? Like plum blossoms in the snow.
How clean is she? Like autumn orchids in the frost.
How quiet is she? Like pine trees in a secluded valley.
How beautiful is she? Like clouds reflecting in a clear pond.
How refined is she? Like a dragon swimming in a winding pool.
How divine is she? Like the moon shining on a cold river.
Far surpassing Xi Shi, close to Wang Zhaojun.
Where was she born? From which realm did she descend?
If not returning from a banquet in the Jade Pool,
She must be the unparalleled one summoned by the sound of the flute from the Purple Mansion."

Baoyu, delighted, bows and asks, "Divine sister, where are you from? Where are you going? I don't know where this place is. Please guide me." The fairy replies, "I live in the Land of Illusion, in the Cave of Dispersed Fragrance on the Mountain of Spring. I am the Fairy of Disillusionment. I oversee the romantic debts of mortals and the grievances of women and men in the world. Recently, the entanglements of love and resentment have intensified, so I came to investigate and spread thoughts of longing. Meeting you today is no coincidence. This place is not far from my realm. I have some celestial tea and wine, a few dancers, and a new song, 'The Dream of the Red Chamber.' Would you like to join me?"
