Chapter 4 already briefly mentioned the temporary residence of Xue's mother and son in the Rong Mansion. This chapter will not elaborate on that matter. Now, let's talk about Lin Daiyu in the Rong Mansion. First, Jia Mu (Grandmother Jia) dotes on her immensely, treating her with the same care and affection as Baoyu. This leaves the three granddaughters, Yingchun, Tanchun, and Xichun, somewhat neglected. The close friendship between Baoyu and Daiyu is also unique: they are inseparable during the day and share the same room at night, truly harmonious and inseparable. Unexpectedly, a new arrival, Xue Baochai, enters their lives. Although slightly older, her dignified bearing and beautiful appearance make everyone say that Daiyu cannot compare. Baochai's behavior is also open-minded and adaptable, unlike Daiyu, who is proud and aloof, looking down on others. This endears Baochai to the servants, including the little maids, who become more intimate with her. Consequently, Daiyu feels a bit resentful, while Baochai remains oblivious.

Baoyu, still a child, has a naturally naive and eccentric disposition, treating all his sisters and brothers equally without distinction. Living with Daiyu in Jia Mu's room makes them more familiar with each other, leading to even greater intimacy. This intimacy inevitably brings minor conflicts and grievances. One day, for some unknown reason, the two have a disagreement, and Daiyu ends up crying alone in her room. Baoyu, feeling remorseful for his harsh words, goes to apologize, and Daiyu gradually comes around.
