Unbeknownst to Niulang, this ox was once a celestial being who had been banished to Earth. One day, the ox revealed to Niulang that if he went to a certain river, he would meet the love of his life.
Following the ox's advice, Niulang went to the river and encountered Zhinü and her sisters, who had descended from Heaven to bathe. As soon as Niulang and Zhinü's eyes met, they fell deeply in love. Zhinü decided to stay on Earth, and the two were married. They lived a blissful life, blessed with two children, a son and a daughter.
However, their happiness was short-lived. When the Jade Emperor discovered that his daughter had married a mortal, he was furious. He ordered Zhinü to return to Heaven immediately. The old ox, sensing the impending separation, sacrificed himself, instructing Niulang to use his hide to make a magical cloak that would allow him to ascend to Heaven.
With the cloak, Niulang, carrying his children in baskets on a yoke, flew up to the heavens to reunite with Zhinü. But the Queen Mother of the West, Zhinü's mother, intervened. With a swipe of her hairpin, she created the Milky Way, a river of stars that separated the lovers.
Moved by their unwavering love, the magpies of the world took pity on them. Once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, thousands of magpies form a bridge across the Milky Way, allowing Niulang and Zhinü to meet. This annual reunion is celebrated as the Qixi Festival, symbolizing eternal love and devotion.

It reflects the values of loyalty, perseverance, and the belief that true love transcends all boundaries, even those between Heaven and Earth.
