Mount Tianzhu is located in Qianshan County, Anhui Province. It is named after its main peak, Tianzhu Peak, which resembles a "pillar supporting the sky." It is one of China's first national key scenic spots, a national AAAAA tourist area, a national forest park, a national geopark, and a site of both natural and cultural heritage. It is recognized as one of China's "Top Ten Most Promising Scenic Areas." The scenic area covers 102.72 square kilometers, with a protected area of 304 square kilometers, and includes eight major scenic spots such as Dalongwo, Foguang Temple, Longtan River, and Xiguanzhai.

During the Spring and Autumn Period, it was the fief of the State of Wan, and the mountain was called Wanshan, with the river named Wanshui. The abbreviation "Wan" for Anhui Province originates from this, hence Mount Tianzhu is also known as Wanshan, considered the source mountain of Anhui. In 106 BC, Emperor Wu of Han visited and conferred the title of "Southern Mountain" (Nanyue) upon it. In the ninth year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty, Emperor Yang expanded the territory and renamed Mount Heng in Hunan as the Southern Mountain, but Mount Tianzhu continued to be revered as the "Ancient Southern Mountain." Throughout history, emperors either personally worshiped or sent officials to pay tribute to the Southern Mountain, Mount Tianzhu.
